Headless Chicken Day at the Gardeners Arms

Headless Chicken Day Mosaic

Hall & Woodhouse Brewery Team members run the Gardeners Arms for a day in the fourth annual “Headless Chicken Day”.

Every year the Managed Public House that wins the division’s ‘Sales Elite’ award are rewarded with a day off for every team member in the winning public house, whilst team members from the brewery descend to take over and run every aspect of the public house for 24 hours.

On Monday 10th November, the 2013 Managed houses Sales Elite winner, the Gardeners Arms received their prize and whilst the team celebrated their well-deserved win with a trip to the bowling alley and a meal.

The day was not only a chance the team at the Gardeners Arms celebrate and relax, but also an opportunity for team members from the Brewery to go “back to the floor and experience a day in the life of Public House Teams they support.

Operations Liaison Manager Duncan Rouse, who organised the event, commented: “As an ex-General Manager myself, I can say that a day off for the entire team is a very rare occurrence. As most Pubs are open seven days a week, time for the team to bond away from work is often hard to organise. As every team member is a cog to the House’s overall operation, it’s vital that everyone has a good working relationship. This reward for the Gardener’s Arms is a chance for Hall & Woodhouse to show its gratitude for all of their hard work.”

There was inevitably some ‘running around like a headless chicken’ as some Brewery team members were working in a Pub for the very first time.  Everyone pulled together though, and put in all of their effort to maintain the high standard set by the Gardeners Team.  Quality Standards Ambassador Craig Haim commented:

“Having never worked in a public house before, this was a totally new concept for me. The tasks which Team Members in our Public Houses carry out are not only very diverse, but also often go unnoticed; keeping logs replenished and stacked neatly next to fires, ensuring all glasses are immaculate and polishing cutlery to a very high standard. All this while making sure the Guest experience is excellent during their entire visit.

It’s crucial to have a good work ethic as well as a constant desire to make people’s day, and I now look at these Team Members with an even higher regard.”

All tips on the day are donated to charity, this year our generous guests donated a total of £116 in tips which have been donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
