Hall & Woodhouse Brewery Team members run the Crown Hotel in Blandford Forum for a day for the fifth annual “Headless Chicken Day”.

Every year, one of the Managed Public Houses is awarded the title of ‘Sales Elite’ and they are rewarded with a day off for every team member, whilst the support team from the brewery descend and run every aspect of the public house for 24 hours. This year was the first time a hotel was commandeered and it certainly posed new challenges!

On Monday 4th November, the Crown Hotel (the 2014 Sales Elite winner) received their prize and the team celebrated their well-deserved win with a trip to Bath for some Christmas shopping and laser tag, and a celebratory meal at their sister House, the Olive Branch.

The day was not only a chance for the team at the Crown Hotel to celebrate and relax, but also an opportunity for team members from the Brewery to go ‘back to the floor’ and experience a day in the life of the Public House teams they support. Brewery team members came from all departments including property, commercial, administration, IT & communications, GP2W (HR) and development. This year the ‘headless chickens’ were joined by none other than Managing Director, Anthony Woodhouse, who lent a hand in covering the housekeeping team.

Debra Reed one of organisers who offered her support said of the event: “All of the brewery support team got stuck right in with the work that needed to be done; the ‘headless chickens’ help out on this day in their own time, so it’s very much appreciated by the Crown team winners.”

There was inevitably some ‘running around like a headless chicken’ as this was the first time that the rule of ’24 hour takeover’ really came into its own. In previous years, public houses  have been run for one trading day – in the hotel 24 hour cover was required, which meant a few brave volunteers managing without sleep in their day jobs the next day, having covered the night porter role!

Clare (Front of House Manager) from the Crown team commented: “We want to thank everyone for all they did on ‘Headless Chicken Day’.  We all thoroughly enjoyed having the day off knowing the Hotel was in good hands!”

All tips on the day are donated to charity, this year our generous guests donated a total of £80 in tips which have been donated to Together for Short Lives.
