Hall & Woodhouse are ingrained in England’s pub and brewing heritage. Remarkably, over 200 years after we were first founded, we’re still owned and managed by the fifth generation of the Woodhouse family. Today hundreds of the best pubs in England have the Hall & Woodhouse name outside - a sure sign that inside you’ll find the highest quality food and drink, a warm welcome, and superb service. We are, after all, on a mission to ‘make people’s day’.

Our pubs reflect the glorious diversity that is England. From bustling city pubs in the heart of the capital through to thatched pubs in the heart of England’s rural communities - unrivalled variety and choice, for both our staff and our customers. But whilst we’re justifiably proud of our heritage, and our traditions and values still hold true, we’re looking forward. We aim to be as much an influence on the future of the Hospitality and Leisure industry, as we have been on its past.

The Hall & Woodhouse story starts with Charles Hall, born in 1751, who at just 26, founded his own brewery. From supplying ale to the Army during the Napoleonic War, Charles then went on to distribute ales to inns and taverns in local towns and villages. Charles Hall passed the business onto his son Robert, who in 1847 took George Woodhouse into partnership. Hall & Woodhouse were officially in business.

From then on, the hallmarks of the company were innovation, originality and expansion. In 1875 the Badger image was adopted as the company trademark, making it one of the oldest marks on record. After the Depression failed to halt progress, Hall & Woodhouse diversified into wine shipping and off licences and in the 1930s, we were the first company to put Best Bitter into a can. A remarkable innovation that we’re still benefiting from today via the take-home market.

We responded to consumer demands for lager. In 1977, the Post Office even issued a special ‘Badger’ stamp to commemorate our 200th anniversary. And when in 1987 the News of the World voted our leading brand Tanglefoot ‘the best beer in Britain’, we realised that we’d made an indelible impression on the national consciousness.

Today, it’s business as usual. We’re still using only the finest ingredients combined with pure spring water from our own well. We’re still brewing some of England’s finest ales. And we still continue to be the inspiration behind some of the best pubs in the land.
