Public House of the Month
Chichester, West Sussex
The Fountain is in the vibrant and exciting city of Chichester. With a casual area in the front of the pub which is perfect to enjoy a drink or a snack, there is also a dining area towards the rear of the pub to enjoy a meal or just to relax in. The Fountain is one of the few pubs in Chichester which has an external seating area which is a great place to watch the world go by.

Julie Diggens took over the Fountain in September 2014 and in that short time, the business has gone from strength to strength. The Fountain has been transformed and is now a lively pub with a great food offer and a friendly atmosphere.
Tell me about how you first started in this industry?
I originally started working as a kitchen porter in my local pub. From there I progressed and became a trainee chef and the moment I turned 18, I moved onto the bar. After just a few weeks on the bar I got my personal licence and I haven’t looked back since.
What are your pubs best bits?
The pub is built against the famous Roman city wall which is still visible within the building itself, The original parts of the building are over 300 years old and is brimming with history. I would say the original beams and features are the pubs best bits it really is a great pub that’s full of character.
You must have a lot of funny stories about being a publican, what’s your funniest pub story?
Working in a pub someone will make you laugh every day. I specifically remember working in a pub in Salisbury, which had a back room with the glass washers in, which we also used for storage. It was an extremely busy afternoon and a portion of chips came down from the kitchen which no one claimed, the manager asked a young lady to put the chips in the glass washer room. 10 minutes later the manager asked where the chips were, the young girl has misheard her and put them into the glass washer on a full cycle.
What sort of food is offered at The Fountain?
Traditional, freshly home-made pub food with our head chef’s personal touches. We also have great specials which are changed daily.
What is your pub famous for?
The Fountain has part of an original Roman Wall which goes around the city. The wall is still a part of the pubs structure and can be found in the restaurant area. With 80% of the wall still in place it is part of the city’s trail walk around Chichester.
The Fountain also has a great reputation for live music and is one of the most popular music venues in Chichester. Lots of professional and semi-professional bands play at the pub on a regular basis.
If I was to go to the bar now and buy you a Badger beer which one would I get you?
I would choose the First Call, recently changed name from the Badger First Gold.
What’s good to see and experience in your area after a visit to the pub?
The Cathedral is an absolute must see and it’s only 5 minutes north of the pub.
What are the best bits of your job?
I love having the opportunity to meet new people every day, I meet so many interesting characters and I love welcoming them to the pub and giving them the best experience possible.
What is your favourite time of year at the Fountain?
Having only been here since September, this is tricky one to answer. Christmas time is always so special and festive in pubs so I am really looking forward to having my first Christmas at the Fountain.
