The present pub is a tribute to the builders who not only restored the pub completely but improved on the original design.
About the pub
Today no one would suspect the disaster that befell the pub that sad Saturday lunchtime. Large fireplaces, a flagstone floor, cosy eating areas are features of the bar which extends the length of the building. There is a large outside area for eating together with a children's play area.
Food is available every day from 11.30-9.30 (10.00 Saturday) and Sunday between 12.00 and 9.30. Apart from daily specials listed on the blackboard the printed menu lists home-made mushroom, walnut and stilton pate followed by dishes like pasta Italienne - pasta served with mushrooms, courgettes and onions in a rich tomato and garlic sauce and pasta Roma - strips of ham in a mushroom , cream and white wine sauce. There are traditional home-made favourites such as steak and Tanglefoot pie plus pork with apricots, carbonnade of beef and traditional ham and eggs.
For vegetarians there is apricot and pine nut roast, spinach and stilton pancakes and vegetable lasagna. There are children's meals , smaller appetite meals plus the usual ploughman's, jacket potatoes and French sticks.
Families are very welcome but no dogs.

Leave the pub turning right then left. Carefully cross the main road towards Mapperton and almost immediately climb the stile on the left. Walk between the field boundary and the Winterborne, cross both stiles on the far side then turn left round to the gate and right up the drive. Pass in front of the dwellings, across the drive and go over the stile into the field. Climb a second stile and continue ahead, over another stile walking until you reach a stile in the hedge. Cross into the adjoining field and turn left, go round the pond to the stile in the hedge and make for the stile by the church, enter the lane and turn right.
In 100 paces go up the drive on the left signposted, Winterborne Kingston. Keep straight ahead over the stile into the field maintaining direction over a couple more stiles, leave by the gate turning right and then left between the farm buildings and onto the tarred drive ahead. Turn left at the cross track through the farmyard to the drive. The tiny church of St Andrew has been here for about 800 years but was restored in 1931 with money raised from the sale of Thomas Hardy manuscripts Turn left into the lane, go up to the crossroads and carefully cross to the lane opposite.
Walk past the dwelling then enter the field on the left opposite the farm. Follow the bridleway across the centre of the field, into the next field then join the track. Just before reaching the road take the track on the right. Narrow but fairly good underfoot this sunken grass bridleway doglegs between high-hedged fields, crosses a small bridge before reaching a cross track. Turn left thorough the small metal gate and follow this often overgrown bridleway which runs close to the hedge on the right before entering a field. Keep walking beside the hedge until you eventually reach the gate leading to the track on the right, walk up to the lane and turn left.
In about 400 paces climb the stile into the field on the left and, bearing slightly left make your way across to the stile in the distant hedge. Keep straight ahead beside the hedge, cross the stile on the far side, turn right then left back to the pub keeping to the right-hand side for safety.
