The Martyrs Inn

Tolpuddle, Nr Dorchester, Dorset, DT2 7ES

A famous pub in the charming village of Tolpuddle

The Martyrs Inn is a traditional Dorset pub in the village of Tolpuddle, eight miles east of Dorchester and 12 miles west of Poole. Built in 1921 to replace a former dilapidated pub that was knocked down in the First World War to allow tanks to pass through the village, the Martyrs Inn holds a lot of history in its walls.

The name, for example, commemorates the six agricultural labourers who, in the face of declining wages, were convicted of trying to create the first trade union — the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers — in 1834. Today, the Martyrs is known for its relaxed atmosphere, contemporary décor and large, south-facing terrace, on which visitors and locals alike enjoy the delicious food on offer and award-winning Badger Beer from Dorset. A great spot for all occasions.

Following the Government’s instruction on the 20th March 2020, we have temporarily closed our doors to protect our guests and our team from the risk of spreading COVID-19.

We are now focussing on the immediate future and how we can continue to make people’s day during the temporary closure of our pubs. We will also ensure that we are well prepared to re-open when it is right to do so.

We continue to brew our award-winning Badger beer at our Blandford Brewery, which you can buy online HERE
