2016 Western Area Winners Announced

The 15th Community Chest Awards Evening was held at the Crown Hotel, Blandford Forum in September 2016. The judges were Tim Lethaby and Marilyn Barber, Blackmore Vale Media, Michael Kay, Dorset Community Foundation, Andy Wing and Mark Woodhouse, Hall & Woodhouse together with Colin Brady and Steve Carpenter.

Mark Woodhouse welcomed guests, which included The Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Angus Campbell, The Bishop of Sherborne, The Rt Rev Karen Gorham and local civic leaders, explaining that the purpose of the Community Chest was to work together towards improving facilities and lives of local residents.

142 applications were received for grants totalling over £235,000. 28 organisations were successful, each receiving a share of £24,100, with grants ranging from £300 to £2,500. This included £500 awarded to Maidencombe Residents’ Association for their Defibrillator Fund to match funds raised on their behalf by their local H&W pub, the Thatched Tavern. Similarly £1,000 was presented to The Pirates of Poole to match funds raised by the Lord Nelson on Poole Quay.

The White Hart, Longham run by Business Partners Paul and Carol Stroud once again generously boosted the Community Chest pot with £1,000 from the proceeds of their Book Club and a Beer & Cheese Evening.

The highest award of £2,500 was presented to Shaftesbury Trinity Centre Trust which owns the Trinity Centre in Bimport and is home to Shaftesbury Scouts and a Day Centre for the Elderly. The money will be used to install disabled toilet facilities in the Centre.

The Townsend Youth Partnership in Bournemouth received £2,000 which will be used to fund various sports and activities at the Youth Centre.
