The 11th Eastern Area Community Chest Awards Evening was held at The World’s End, Patching in September 2018. The event was well attended by local civic leaders, award winners and their guests. The judges were Gary Shipton and Blaise Tapp, Sussex Newspapers; Adrian Barrott, Sussex Community Foundation; John Scudder, H&W Business Partner at The Plough, Ifield and Mark Woodhouse, Hall & Woodhouse.
208 requests were received during the application period for grants totalling over £411,000. 24 organisations were successful, each receiving a share of £24,967 with awards ranging from £300 to £2,500.
The biggest award of the night was made to Sanctuary of Chichester, which provides relief and aid to refugees in coastal West Sussex. They received £2,500 which will go towards providing housing to those in desperate need. The organisation was formed by local residents who wanted to support those who were seeking asylum in this country but have no means to support themselves. The group supports asylum seekers from countries such as Syria by hosting support sessions and providing meals. Much of this is paid for by supporters of the group.
