Old Inn - Wimborne

Posted on June 2016

Congratulations to The Old Inn, Holt who has won Pub of the Month for June. We caught up with Simon to see what he had to say.

How and where did you start in the hospitality industry?

I started in the pub industry when I was 13 in the Harrow Inn, Caterham. I then went onto college to gain my diploma with City and Guilds and worked in various restaurants and hotels before I opened my first restaurant. My first restaurant was the Red Lion in Betchworth, Reigate, during 1995/6 when I managed to triple turnover in two years which was a great success for me at the time. I then moved to Dorset in 2003/4 and worked in the Anvil before becoming a Business Partner at The Old Inn, Holt.

What do you like best about managing your public houses?

The best part about managing public houses is the communication with guests. The relationship with our guests is a lot more informal, especially with our regulars, than guests in a restaurant.

How do your team sum up the Hall and Woodhouse values?

Our team at The Old Inn sum up the Hall& Woodhouse values very well.

What’s your favourite pub event of the year?

I would have to say Christmas. We are always fully booked on Christmas Day and all guests and team members are extremely happy as the atmosphere is very festive. Many of our team members will choose to work Christmas Day for that reason.

How is your pub part of the local community? And what kind of people do you have visiting your pub?

We get a mix of guests, of all age groups.  I think there is a need for pubs offering something different, without loud music and fruit machines, which is one of the reasons we draw in a large mix.

What sort of food is offered at The Old Inn?

We offer traditional pub food such as steak and kidney pie and scampi, along with specials and fish dishes. We are most popular for our famous pizzas made to order and have a current record of selling 400 pizzas in a week!

What’s good to see and experience in your area after a visit to the pub?

Our guests will often visit National Trust properties in the local area such as Kingston Lacy, and guests will sometimes take a trip to the coastline.

And lastly, if you were to recommend a perfect combination of Badger Ale and a meal for your guests, what would you recommend?

I would have to say one of our pizzas with a pint of Firsty Ferret.
