This month we're joined by Emma from Hall & Woodhouse Bath who have won Pub of the Month for September. She's been Assistant Manager there for nearly three years. Here's what she had to say about her pub and team.

How did you start in the hospitality industry?

I got my start in hospitality as a waitress and potwasher in a café on the outskirts of Wimborne; there was a fantastic orange uniform!

Have your previous jobs differed from your current one?

I’ve always been in the industry so it’s all I’ve known, really. I’ve gained experience in all areas and now I’m Assistant Manager of this wonderful place. I’ll have been here for three years this May.

And what do you like best about managing the Hall & Woodhouse Bath?

It’s such a busy place; we never stand still and each day is different, especially on a Saturday evening. They can be really challenging, but that’s what we thrive off of here and the fact that we have a really great, fun team just tops it all off.

So how do your Team and how does your pub sum up the Hall & Woodhouse values?

The biggest thing our team has is working incredibly well together and being exceptionally kind. It’s hard work, you run around and your feet ache at the end of the day but there’s not one person that doesn’t work as hard as the others. They’re just a fantastic team.

Tell us more about Hall & Woodhouse Bath, what is special about your pub?

My favourite features are the bar and roof terrace. The bar was built with a copper finish and just looks incredible and the roof terrace is a lovely place to be, where people can chat while having a drink in the sun. One of my favourite things to do is clear glasses from the roof terrace. I love being up there!

As a publican, you must have some good stories!

On the ground floor we have a stuffed cow’s head which the team having lovingly named Alfred. One day a man came into the bar, convinced he’d won Alfred in an auction (Hall & Woodhouse Bath was historically used as an auction house) and tried to remove him three times! The third time, he managed to get Alfred out of the door and ran down the road, the cow’s head tucked under his arm, with some of our team running after him. We got him back and he’s still a fixture!

Are you hosting events coming up or have recently been a part of?

We’re looking forward to Party in the City, a live music event taking place in Bath on the 20th May. It’s always a great weekend.

If I were to buy you a drink from the bar, what would you like?

It would have to be a large glass of Monastrel. It’s a great wine for the price.

What would you order to eat with your drink of choice?

It doesn’t go with the wine, but I’d pick a fish finger sandwich on brown bread!

What’s good to see and experience in your area after a visit to the pub?

There’s so much to see in Bath it’s hard to pick! The Roman baths are a must and the shopping’s pretty great. It’s just a lush place to be.
